CHAPTER VI: THE ECHOES OF WAR

The blood-red neon of the ambulance strobes sliced through the midnight fog, painting the marble pillars of Moonstone Estate like a crime scene before fading into the black. Cold rain began to slick the stone driveway, but Jonathan remained motionless on the steps, the icy air burning his lungs. His hands still carried the fading ghost of Emily’s warmth—and the horrifying chill of her dropping blood pressure.

A dark shadow materialized at his elbow. Samuel—his right hand, a man built for quiet violence—held out a glowing, encrypted satellite phone.

“The decoy ambulance took the main highway, sir,” Samuel reported, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. “Emily is in the armor-plated transport taking the back roads toward St. Jude’s Private Hospital. The fifth floor is locked down. My best men are on the doors.”

Jonathan’s voice was dangerously quiet, stripped of all humanity. “And the Vance syndicate?”

“They’ve already moved,” Samuel whispered, checking a flashing feed on his device. “Leaked medical reports just hit the dark web. They’re launching a smear campaign at dawn, claiming you drove Emily to a breakdown. They want to trigger a shareholder panic, freeze your assets, and force a emergency board takeover by sunrise.”

Jonathan turned slowly, looking back into the hollow grandeur of Moonstone Estate. Beneath the towering crystal chandelier, the grand foyer lay silent, yet the air was heavy with the metallic tang of fresh blood. On the polished floor lay a single silver cufflink, dropped during the chaotic transfer.

He stooped down, scooped it into his palm, and crushed it until the metal bit into his skin.

Emily’s desperate, dying gaze was seared into his soul, alongside the pledge he had whispered to her: Leaving this city forever. But Jonathan knew the brutal truth of their world. You couldn't run from shadows; you had to burn down the night to see them coming. To grant Emily and their unborn son a future, he would have to become the monster he had spent years trying to suppress.

“Sir?” Samuel asked, catching the sinister, lethal shift in Jonathan’s posture.

“Contact the vault in Geneva,” Jonathan commanded, his tone dropping into a cold, terrifying calm. “Execute Protocol Omega. Release every black-market audit, every off-book execution order, and every corrupt ledger tying the Vance dynasty to the cartel.”

Samuel went pale. “Jonathan… that doesn't just destroy the Vances. It exposes the entire underground network. It triggers an all-out war with every power broker in North America. There’s no coming back from Protocol Omega.”

Jonathan stepped over the threshold, his heavy boots crunching on shattered glass from the earlier confrontation. He didn't look back.

“They ended my family tonight, Samuel,” Jonathan said softly, his shadow stretching long across the blood-stained marble. “Let the war begin.”

Miles away, hidden deep within the high-security intensive care unit of St. Jude’s, the steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep of a heart monitor echoed in the dimly lit room.

Emily lay pale against the white sheets, tubes and wires binding her to life. Outside her window, thunderstorm clouds rolled in over the skyline.

Slowly, her eyelashes fluttered. Her fingers twitched, feebly reaching down toward her stomach.

As her consciousness clawed its way back from the dark, a soft vibration sounded from the side table. A burner phone—one Jonathan knew nothing about, tucked secretly inside the lining of her purse—illuminated the dark room.

A single encrypted text message flashed across the screen:

May you like

[UNKNOWN NUMBER]: He thinks he’s protecting you. Don't trust him, Emily. He isn't taking you away to save you. He's taking you to hide what you really are.

Emily’s eyes snapped wide open, her breath catching in her throat as the heart monitor began to spike wildly.
