Chapter 17

CHAPTER XVII: THE TIDE OF BLOOD

The name echoed off the wet limestone walls, colder than the dripping seawater: Marcus Vance.

Emily’s fingers tightened against the tactical straps holding her son. The revelation didn't shatter her; it hardened her into diamond. "Then he made a mistake coming here himself," she said, her voice dropping into a register so cold it barely sounded human. "He should have stayed a ghost."

"He won't be on the beach," Jonathan said, stepping past Samuel to lead the way down the final incline. "Marcus never puts himself on the front line. He’ll be offshore, watching from a command vessel."

"He’s in a blacked-out yacht two miles out," Samuel confirmed, keeping pace behind them as the tunnel began to widen. "He has an entire tactical unit sweeping the coastline. If we hit the open water in my speedboat, we’ll be fish in a barrel."

"Unless we give him a target he can't resist," Jonathan replied, his mind calculating variables at lightning speed.

They reached the end of the smuggler’s tunnel. The mouth opened into a hidden sea cave carved into the face of a sheer hundred-foot cliff. Below them, black waves crashed violently against jagged rocks. Tucked into the natural stone slipway was Samuel’s boat—a high-performance, matte-black interceptor with twin silent-drive engines.

Rain was pouring outside the cave entrance, turning the open sea into a chaotic churn of whitecaps and foam.

Suddenly, a blinding beam of light swept across the mouth of the cave.

Through the sheet of rain, a massive seventy-foot tactical cutter loomed in the dark water a few hundred yards out. Two heavy machine-gun turrets mounted on its bow turned slowly, searching the cliff face. A loudspeaker crackled over the roar of the surf, the voice amplified and modulated, bouncing off the rock walls like a demon's rumble.

"Emily..."

The sound of her father’s voice made the blood in her veins run cold.

"I brought you into this world, my dear," Marcus Vance’s voice echoed over the waves. "You truly believed a low-born Mercer boy could hide you from me? Give me the boy, Emily. Hand over my heir, and I will let Jonathan die quickly."

Jonathan stepped up to the edge of the stone ledge, shielding Emily behind him. He pulled the obsidian glass drive from his pocket and held it up into the glare of the cutter’s spotlight.

"You're looking for the wrong thing, Marcus!" Jonathan shouted over the storm, his voice carrying straight through the wind. "You think you came here for a child? This drive is linked directly to your cutter's satellite array! Emily unlocked the master override ten minutes ago!"

On the deck of the tactical cutter, the bright navigation lights suddenly flickered wildly. The boat's primary engine groaned, sputtering as digital firewalls across its control bridge collapsed under a flood of encrypted malware.

"What is this?!" Marcus's voice barked over the speaker, losing its calm composure for the first time. "Fire on that cave! Level it!"

"Now!" Emily screamed.

Samuel leapt into the interceptor, cranking the mechanical ignition. The twin engines roared to life with a deafening growl. Jonathan grabbed Emily, swinging her safely into the passenger well before diving aboard just as a hail of fifty-caliber rounds chewed into the rock ceiling above them, raining shattered stone into the water.

Samuel slammed the throttle to the wall.

The interceptor surged out of the cave like a missile, tearing through the wave crests straight toward the blinded, malfunctioning warship.

"What's the play, Jonathan?!" Samuel yelled over the roar of the supercharged engine, dodging a burst of tracer rounds that sizzled into the ocean beside them.

Jonathan reached into the weapon locker beneath the seat, pulling out a heavy, wire-guided anti-material launcher. He hoisted it onto his shoulder, locking his eyes on the cutter's bridge where the silhouette of Marcus Vance stood behind the reinforced glass.

"We stop running," Jonathan said softly.

He pulled the trigger.
