CHAPTER XV: THE KILL BOX

The rumble of the V8 engines grew louder, echoing off the narrow cliffside walls like approaching thunder.

Jonathan didn't waste a second. He moved through the villa with practiced, mechanical efficiency, pulling heavy wooden shutters closed and locking down the primary doors. Emily slipped down into the wine cellar, verified the pressure seal on the subterranean safe room where their son lay sleeping, and sprinted back up the stone steps.

"They're coming up the main drive," Emily reported, adjusting her grip on her tactical sidearm. "Three vehicles. They'll bottleneck at the iron gate."

"Good," Jonathan said softly, stepping into the dimly lit hallway. "Let's make sure they stay there."

He reached behind a decorative marble sconce on the wall and pulled a hidden mechanical lever. A low clanking of gears echoed beneath the floorboards as the villa's legacy security system—installed quietly during their first month in Italy—activated. Heavy steel plates slid down behind the wooden shutters, reinforcing every window on the ground floor.

Outside, tires screeched to a halt against the gravel. Heavy car doors slammed shut in rapid succession.

"Clear the perimeter! Thermal optics on!" a voice barked in heavily accented French outside the courtyard wall.

Jonathan and Emily stood back-to-back in the dark foyer. Through the iron peephole of the front door, Jonathan watched four heavily armed operatives in matte-black tactical gear breach the outer gate, weapons raised, sweeping the courtyard.

"On my mark," Jonathan whispered. "Floor vents."

Emily nodded, dropping into a low crouch near the central grate.

Two operatives stepped onto the tiled veranda, raising a breaching charge toward the heavy oak front door. Before they could plant it, Jonathan fired three rounds straight through the reinforced peephole. The first two rounds shattered the charge, and the third struck the lead operator, dropping him instantly to the stone tiles.

"Breach! Breach!" the mercenary leader screamed.

A hail of high-caliber automatic fire erupted from the courtyard, chewing through the wooden door, but the steel reinforcement held firm.

From her position at the floor vent, Emily pulled a small pin on an incendiary canister and dropped it straight into the sub-floor ventilation tube. A second later, a brilliant wall of white-hot magnesium fire burst outward from the courtyard drainage grates, catching two mercenaries in the open and engulfing the front porch in blinding heat and smoke.

Screams echoed across the courtyard as the remaining operatives scattered for cover behind their armored SUVs.

"Movement on the east terrace!" Emily warned, hearing the sharp crack of breaking glass from the upper level.

"Cover the hall!" Jonathan shouted, turning toward the central staircase.

Two mercenaries dropped from the upper balcony onto the marble stairs, their night-vision goggles glowing green in the smoky darkness. Jonathan lunged forward, tackling the first operative into the railing before he could raise his rifle. They crashed onto the floor together in a flurry of brutal, close-quarters combat.

Jonathan drove an elbow into the man's throat, stripped his sidearm, and fired two point-blank shots into the second mercenary rushing down the steps.

Breathing heavily, Jonathan stood up, wiping a smear of blood from his jaw.

Across the smoke-filled room, the heavy front door suddenly groaned under the weight of a secondary hydraulic ram. The steel plate warped, hinges snapping with the sound of tearing metal.

The door blew inward.

Through the dust and smoke, three more Syndicate operatives stepped over the threshold, their rifles trained on Jonathan. He raised his weapon, but his slide locked back—empty.

Before the lead mercenary could pull his trigger, a suppressed burst of automatic fire ripped through the doorway from behind the operatives.

Three red bursts bloomed on the mercenaries' backs as they collapsed face-first onto the marble tiles.

Standing in the ruined doorway, silhouetted against the burning wreckage of the SUV in the courtyard, was a tall figure in a wet trench coat, holding a smoking assault rifle.

He lowered his weapon, revealing a weathered face and cold, grey eyes.

"You always were terrible at managing your ammunition, Jonathan," Samuel said, stepping over the bodies into the foyer.

Jonathan stood his ground, his eyes burning with fury, even as Emily stepped beside him with her weapon aimed squarely at Samuel's chest.

"Give me one reason why she shouldn't pull that trigger right now," Jonathan growled.

May you like

Samuel ejected his empty magazine, letting it clatter to the floor, and clicked a fresh one into place without breaking eye contact.

"Because six more trucks just turned off the highway," Samuel replied grimly. "And unlike these amateurs, the next wave brought heavy artillery. If we want to walk out of this valley alive, we leave now."
