CHAPTER 20 — THE MAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

They left the fire station through a drainage tunnel seconds before police vehicles surrounded the building.

Dana led them to a service van hidden behind a water-treatment plant.

Mason could barely stand.

Cole supported him despite the accusation still hanging between them.

“You should leave him,” Margaret said.

Lily heard her.

“No.”

Margaret looked at her granddaughter.

“He endangered you.”

“He saved Mommy.”

“He also kidnapped you.”

Lily’s voice became quiet.

“People can do two things.”

No one answered.

Rebecca directed them to a safe house beneath an old printing company. By noon, Claire’s face appeared on every news broadcast.

Police described her as the leader of a conspiracy involving stolen medical records, child abduction, and corporate espionage.

Sarah had released edited footage from the hospital.

The video showed Claire breaking into the facility.

It did not show Daniel.

It did not show Olivia.

It did not show Sarah’s armed men.

The delayed public upload reached three hours.

Rebecca connected remotely.

“Daniel changed the encryption pathway,” she said. “If the countdown reaches zero now, the server will publish empty folders.”

“Can you repair it?”

“Not without the original card.”

Daniel had the memory card.

Sarah had the police.

Claire had only copies no one could authenticate.

A knock came from inside the wall.

Cole raised his weapon.

Mason sat upright.

“There is a second entrance.”

“How do you know?” Claire asked.

“I used this location before.”

The hidden panel opened.

A man wearing a gray coat stepped inside.

Claire recognized him as one of Sarah’s hospital guards.

Cole aimed at his chest.

The man removed his coat.

Mason’s shirt was underneath.

Claire turned.

The injured man sitting near Lily was no longer there.

A bundle of blankets had been arranged to resemble his body.

Mason had disappeared through the panel and returned in disguise.

“How long were you gone?” Claire demanded.

“Long enough to collect something Sarah does not know I have.”

He placed a photograph on the table.

Claire stared at it.

Her father stood outside a lakeside house.

Peter Bennett had supposedly died eighteen months after Margaret’s car crash.

Claire had identified his body through a hospital window.

She had buried his ashes beside an empty grave meant for Margaret.

In the photograph, Peter held a newspaper.

The date was three days earlier.

“That could be altered.”

Mason placed a second photograph beside it.

This one showed Peter speaking to Sarah Vane.

A third person stood behind them.

Olivia.

Claire picked up the image.

“Where was this taken?”

“Lake Emery.”

“Why is Olivia with them?”

“The photograph was taken before the hospital.”

Margaret snatched it from Claire.

Her face changed.

“Peter knows where Sarah keeps the original trust records.”

Claire stared at her mother.

“You knew he was alive.”

“I knew his death was questionable.”

“That means yes.”

“No. It means Gray Tide never allowed me to see his body.”

“I saw it.”

“You saw a man covered in burns.”

Mason leaned against the table.

“Sarah has maintained doubles, replacement identities, and false death records for decades.”

Claire’s eyes returned to the photograph.

Her father looked older.

Thinner.

But alive.

Mason placed a key beside it.

“There is one more thing.”

The key bore the number nine.

“Peter gave this to me six months ago.”

“You met my father?”

“He contacted me after Lily’s fourth birthday.”

“What did he say?”

Mason’s answer came slowly.

“He told me to get you and Lily away from North Harbor.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because Sarah already knew he had contacted me.”

Mason looked at Lily.

“And because she showed me what would happen if I disobeyed.”

He took out his phone and opened a video.

Claire saw herself sleeping in bed.

A red targeting light rested against her forehead.

Then moved toward Lily’s crib.

Mason stopped the recording.

“That was the night I realized I had never been your husband.”

A noise came from the ceiling.

Rebecca looked at the security screen.

A thermal image showed twelve armed figures surrounding the building.

Sarah’s voice came through every speaker.

“Mason has given you enough truth.”

May you like

The walls began vibrating.

“Now ask him what he received in exchange for marrying you.”
