CHAPTER 90 — THE MAN BENEATH THE SEA

The name echoed through Pelagos.

Eleanor.

Claire felt it in her bones.

Margaret had once called her Ellie during a fever when she was five. When Claire asked about it later, Margaret claimed she had been confused.

Prime backed away from the opening containment doors.

“That chamber was never supposed to open.”

Mason aimed at her.

“Who is inside?”

“The donor.”

The floor separated.

A platform rose from the darkness.

A man stood inside a transparent containment unit.

He appeared to be in his early forties, though the records beside him were dated more than seventy years earlier.

His dark eyes focused on Claire.

“My daughter.”

Claire could not speak.

Prime activated emergency controls.

Nothing responded.

The man placed one hand against the glass.

Every Gray Tide subject in Pelagos fell to their knees.

Rose and Iris resisted.

Daniel remained standing.

Lily held Claire’s hand.

Olivia’s unborn baby kicked with such force that she cried out.

The man looked at her stomach.

“The Anchor lives.”

Claire forced herself to move closer.

“Who are you?”

“My name was erased before Silas Vane was born.”

Prime shouted at the guards.

“Seal the chamber!”

The guards ignored her.

The man continued.

“Silas did not invent identity transfer. He stole it from me.”

The containment glass opened.

Mason fired a warning shot.

The bullet stopped in midair and fell.

The man wore no visible technology.

Yet every machine obeyed him.

“My blood created the resistance trait,” he told Claire. “Your mother was chosen because she could carry it.”

Margaret appeared on a security screen from Washington.

Her face was filled with terror.

“Claire, leave Pelagos now.”

“How do you know him?”

Margaret looked at the man.

“He is not your father.”

The man smiled.

“No. I am the reason her father was created.”

Prime tried to escape.

The residents seized her.

Her face began shifting.

For a moment she looked like Claire.

Then Sarah.

Then Miriam.

Then a woman no one recognized.

Prime had never possessed a single identity.

She was a living archive of thousands.

The man turned toward Lily.

“You opened the final chamber.”

Lily hid behind Claire.

“What do you want?”

“To finish what Gray Tide interrupted.”

Across the city, thousands of sealed pods opened.

Inside each was a sleeping family.

Mother.

Father.

Children.

Every family looked identical to someone currently living in the outside world.

Ward checked the identification files.

“These are not replacements.”

The man nodded.

“They are originals.”

A global transmission began automatically.

People around the world watched supposedly dead relatives awaken inside Pelagos.

Political leaders saw their own faces.

Parents saw children they had buried.

Husbands saw wives they had mourned.

The man addressed the world.

“You have been living among copies for generations.”

Panic erupted across every government channel.

Claire looked at the files.

Some originals had been stored before Gray Tide officially existed.

The dates reached back more than one hundred years.

“This cannot be real,” Mason whispered.

The man looked at Claire.

“Reality is the identity that survives.”

Olivia collapsed.

Her water had broken.

The Anchor was coming.

At the same moment, Sarah’s medical monitor appeared on Claire’s screen.

Sarah had disappeared from Washington.

Rebecca’s final message played.

SOMEONE CAME FOR HER.

The security footage showed Sarah walking willingly beside Miriam.

Behind them was Silas Vane.

Alive in a new body.

The man beneath Pelagos smiled.

“My children have returned.”

Claire looked from Olivia to Lily, then toward the thousands of awakening families.

“What happens now?”

The man placed his hand on the Pelagos control system.

Seven new symbols appeared above the city.

None matched the old Council.

“The first Gray Tide replaced individuals,” he said.

“The second replaced families.”

Outside, submarines from multiple nations surrounded Pelagos.

Missile systems locked onto the city.

The man looked toward the ocean ceiling.

“The third will replace the world.”

A countdown appeared across every screen.

PHASE THREE ACTIVATION.

23:59:59.

Lily tightened her grip on Claire’s hand.

Then someone spoke behind them.

Claire turned.

Sarah stood in the doorway.

Miriam stood beside her.

Silas stood behind them.

All three were smiling.

Sarah raised a gun.

But she did not aim at Claire.

She aimed at the man who claimed to have created them all.

“Dad,” Sarah said.

“You should have stayed asleep.”

May you like

She pulled the trigger.
