CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN IN THE STORAGE UNIT

The storage facility stood beside an abandoned freight yard north of Port Haven.
Evelyn entered a six-digit code at the security gate.
The property manager looked up when they passed the office, but Evelyn kept driving.
Unit 317 was located at the far end of the building.
Claire inserted the brass key.
The lock opened immediately.
Inside were twelve archive boxes, a metal filing cabinet, and a folding table covered with photographs.
Mason appeared in almost every image.
In one photograph, he stood outside Gray Tide Development.
In another, he met Daniel Cross at a private airport.
Several showed him with Olivia.
But the earliest photograph had been taken four years before the affair supposedly began.
Mason and Olivia sat together inside his car.
They were not touching.
They were studying a folder.
Claire brought the photograph closer to the overhead light.
The folder had her mother’s name printed across the top.
Evelyn opened the first archive box.
Inside were bank statements, property deeds, and copies of Mason’s identification under three different names.
Michael Carter.
Matthew Cole.
Mason Bennett.
Claire picked up an old driver’s license.
The photograph was undeniably Mason.
But his name was listed as Matthew Cole.
Rebecca’s last name.
“What did he do before he met me?”
“We don’t know.”
Claire searched through another box.
She found a file labeled:
NORTH HARBOR — FINAL CONTROL.
The file contained a step-by-step plan.
First, Mason would gain financial authority through marriage.
Second, he would use Claire’s emotional vulnerability to document instability.
Third, he would secure an emergency business resolution.
Fourth, he would create a custody dispute.
Fifth, he would force the transfer of North Harbor Point.
Every stage was dated.
Several had already been completed.
At the bottom of the page were two typed words.
Phase Two.
Claire turned to Evelyn.
“The payment to Olivia was labeled Phase One.”
Evelyn nodded.
“This plan has multiple stages.”
Claire flipped to the next page.
It was a draft psychological evaluation claiming Claire suffered from severe delusions, paranoia, and violent behavior.
The doctor’s signature was blank.
Another document proposed that Claire be placed under temporary guardianship.
Mason was listed as the guardian.
“He doesn’t only want the company,” Claire whispered.
“He wants control over every legal decision you make.”
A sound came from the hallway outside.
Evelyn immediately switched off the overhead light.
Footsteps approached.
Claire held her breath.
They stopped outside Unit 317.
Someone touched the handle.
Evelyn reached inside her coat.
The handle moved again.
Then a woman’s voice came through the door.
“I know you’re in there.”
Claire looked at Evelyn.
“Do you know her?”
Evelyn’s expression had gone completely still.
“Yes.”
The door lifted several inches.
A pair of black boots appeared beneath it.
Evelyn stepped forward and raised the door the rest of the way.
A blond woman stood outside.
She was thin, pale, and approximately Claire’s age.
A scar crossed the side of her neck.
Claire recognized her from the courthouse photograph.
Rebecca Cole.
The woman who had disappeared.
Rebecca looked directly at Claire’s wedding ring.
“You need to take that off.”
Claire stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because Mason gave me the same ring nine years ago.”
Rebecca entered the storage unit and shut the door behind her.
Evelyn watched her carefully.
“We thought you were dead.”
“I was supposed to be.”
Rebecca looked at the documents spread across the table.
“You found Phase Two.”
Claire stepped toward her.
“My daughter is with Mason.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me what he’s planning.”
Rebecca’s face tightened.
“He’s not going to keep Lily.”
Claire felt a brief wave of relief.
Then Rebecca continued.
“He’s going to make sure neither of you can ever testify against him.”
Claire’s relief vanished.
“What does that mean?”
Rebecca reached into her bag and removed a small digital recorder.
“I spent nine years hiding because of what’s on this.”
She placed it on the table.
“But before you listen, there’s something you need to know about Olivia.”
Claire’s jaw tightened.
“I know enough about my sister.”
“No,” Rebecca said. “You don’t.”
She pressed a button.
Olivia’s voice filled the dark storage unit.
“I did everything you asked. I got Claire to sign the hospital forms. I changed the emergency contact. I even switched the coffee.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Mason answered in the recording.
“Then why is she still asking questions?”
Olivia’s voice became nervous.
“Because she’s stronger than her mother was.”
There was a short silence.
Then Mason said something that made Claire’s entire body go cold.
“Her mother asked questions too.”
The recording ended.
Claire stared at Rebecca.
“You said Olivia switched my coffee.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Room 614.”
“What did they give me?”
“I don’t know.”
“And my mother?”
Rebecca looked toward the closed door.
“Your mother discovered who Mason really was.”
Claire moved closer.
“Did he cause her accident?”
Rebecca did not answer immediately.
When she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible.
“Mason wasn’t driving the car that forced your mother off the road.”
“Then who was?”
May you like
Rebecca looked at the photograph of Olivia holding Claire’s mother’s file.
“Your sister was.”
