CHAPTER 37 — SARAH’S BLOOD

Cole aimed his gun at Sarah.

“Get on your knees.”

Sarah obeyed.

Claire approached her.

“What did you mean?”

Sarah looked at Margaret.

“Tell her.”

Margaret remained silent.

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“You still cannot say it.”

Rose stepped between them.

“Say what?”

Sarah removed a bloodstained glove and held out her hand.

A ring rested in her palm.

Margaret had worn the same design for as long as Claire could remember.

Two stars above a wave.

“I was born three years before Rose,” Sarah said.

Claire felt sick.

Margaret shook her head.

“You were stillborn.”

“That is what Miriam told you.”

Sarah looked at Claire.

“Gray Tide did not steal one child from her. They stole two.”

Claire lowered Cole’s weapon with her hand.

“You are saying you are our sister?”

“I am saying we share a mother.”

Margaret sank against the wall.

Sarah’s expression softened for only a moment.

“You never looked for me.”

“I did not know you were alive.”

“You looked for Rose.”

“Because I saw her file.”

“And when you saw mine?”

Margaret did not answer.

Sarah’s eyes hardened.

“You left me inside Gray Tide because you thought I had become too dangerous.”

Margaret whispered, “You had.”

Suddenly, a bullet struck the wall beside Sarah’s head.

Guards appeared at both ends of the corridor.

But they were not aiming only at Claire’s group.

They were aiming at Sarah too.

Sarah stood.

“They found me.”

“Your own people?” Mason asked.

“They stopped being mine when I refused to kill Lily.”

The guards advanced.

Sarah pointed toward the door marked ORIGIN.

“That room has an emergency flood tunnel.”

Claire did not move.

“Why should we trust you?”

“Because the woman controlling Gray Tide wants all three daughters alive.”

Sarah looked at Olivia.

“But she only needs one unborn child.”

The lights turned red.

A woman’s calm voice filled the corridor.

“Sarah, your service is complete.”

May you like

Sarah’s face went pale.

“Mother is awake.”
