CHAPTER 61 — MASON’S BROTHER

Mason aimed his gun through the train window.
The man at the gate raised both hands.
“My name is Jonah Reed.”
Mason’s father, Elias, had never mentioned another son.
“Stay inside,” Mason ordered.
The train stopped.
Jonah approached alone.
He had Mason’s face but moved differently. His left leg dragged slightly.
Elias stared at him.
“Jonah?”
The man’s eyes filled with tears.
“You remember me.”
Mason looked at his father.
“Who is he?”
“Your older brother.”
“You told me I was your only child.”
“Miriam took Jonah after the first memory trial.”
Jonah looked toward Saint Orison.
“She gave me back when she needed someone to protect the orphanage.”
Sarah stepped off the train.
“Where is Miriam?”
“Gone.”
Iris had said the same thing.
Jonah’s gaze moved to Olivia.
“But the Founder is waiting.”
“Who is the Founder?” Claire asked.
Jonah looked at Elias.
“Tell them.”
Elias lowered his head.
“Miriam’s father. Dr. Silas Vane.”
Daniel frowned.
“He would be more than one hundred years old.”
“He stopped aging normally after the first cellular-transfer experiments.”
Rebecca looked toward the orphanage windows.
“Are you claiming he is still alive?”
Jonah nodded.
“Parts of him are.”
The front doors opened.
A wheelchair rolled out by itself.
An elderly man sat beneath a blanket.
Half his face was covered by metal.
Silas Vane raised one finger.
Every electronic device shut down.
Olivia’s monitor went black.
Rose and Iris collapsed simultaneously.
Silas spoke through a mechanical voice box.
“Bring me the Anchor.”
Mason stepped in front of Olivia.
Silas studied him.
“You resemble the brother I ordered Miriam to destroy.”
Mason looked at Jonah.
Jonah whispered, “He means you.”
Mason’s memories flashed.
A white room.
A red door.
Jonah screaming.
Mason holding a knife.
Silas smiled.
“You already killed your brother once.”
May you like
Jonah opened his coat.
A long scar crossed his chest.
