CHAPTER 77 — THE LANTERN HOUSE

Adrian’s helicopter flew beneath military radar.
They landed outside Philadelphia and entered the city through subway maintenance tunnels.
The Lantern House was hidden beneath an old theater.
Margaret knocked seven times on a steel door.
An elderly woman opened it.
“Margaret Bennett.”
“Hello, Evelyn.”
Evelyn looked at Lily and Olivia.
“You brought the keys.”
Claire raised her weapon.
Margaret stepped between them.
“She is not Gray Tide.”
Evelyn had spent forty years helping stolen children locate their real families.
The Lantern House contained files that had never entered digital systems.
Names written by hand.
Photographs stored on film.
Letters from mothers whose babies had disappeared.
Evelyn showed Claire a wall covered with the Claire subjects.
C-One through C-Seven.
Beside them was an eighth photograph.
CLAIRE PRIME.
Claire stared at the image.
The woman looked nothing like her.
“Who is she?”
“The original identity template,” Evelyn said. “Claire was based on her psychological profile, not her face.”
Claire Prime had been a nurse who helped children escape Saint Orison.
Silas killed her, then used her name to create the maternal identity project.
Rose looked at the wall.
“So none of us replaced a real Claire Bennett.”
“You inherited the name of a hero.”
Claire felt something inside her settle.
Her life was still hers.
Evelyn opened another file.
Lily’s biological records confirmed Sarah was her birth mother.
Yet a handwritten note had been added.
MATERNAL BOND: C-SIX.
The program recognized Claire as Lily’s true psychological mother.
Sarah read it silently.
Claire stood beside her.
“You saved her.”
“You raised her.”
Neither needed to surrender the word mother.
An alarm sounded upstairs.
Military vehicles surrounded the theater.
Evelyn checked the hidden cameras.
Adrian’s Crown soldiers were leading them.
Claire turned toward him.
“You betrayed us.”
Adrian looked genuinely confused.
“I gave no order.”
A second Adrian appeared on the security screen outside.
The Adrian standing inside whispered, “R-Two.”
His replacement had found them.
Then every door in the Lantern House locked.
Evelyn drew a gun.
“I’m sorry, Margaret.”
May you like
She aimed at Lily.
“The Council promised to return my son.”
