CHAPTER 89 — THE LOST HEIR

Prime led them inside Pelagos.

The ocean city extended miles beneath the surface.

Its residents had already formed schools, clinics, and councils.

Many genuinely believed Prime had rescued them.

Claire watched children run toward Rose, calling her Mother Seven.

Rose looked overwhelmed.

Prime brought Claire to a chamber containing the oldest Gray Tide records.

A birth certificate appeared on the wall.

The child had no name.

Mother: Margaret Bennett.

Father: Unknown.

Classification: Natural Convergence.

Unlike the engineered Claire subjects, Margaret’s final child had been born with the identity-resistance trait Gray Tide had tried to manufacture.

Claire was that child.

“They labeled you C-Six to hide you among their experiments,” Prime said.

“Why?”

“Silas feared what you could do.”

Claire looked at the Gray Tide network surrounding them.

“What can I do?”

“You create loyalty without conditioning.”

“That is called love.”

“To Silas, it was the only force he could not control.”

Prime claimed every stage of Claire’s life had been designed to measure that force.

Thomas.

Margaret.

Lily.

Mason.

Even Sarah.

Prime opened another file.

Lily had not been randomly switched into Claire’s arms.

Sarah had selected Claire before Lily’s birth.

Claire remembered Sarah saying she had been told the baby died.

“She didn’t know.”

“Not consciously,” Prime said. “But part of her conditioning recognized you as the safest mother.”

Olivia entered with Rose and Iris.

“The baby is reacting to something below us.”

Prime looked pleased.

“The Anchor has reached Pelagos.”

Mason drew his gun.

“We are leaving.”

The doors sealed.

Prime’s residents surrounded them.

Ward reached for her radio.

No signal escaped the city.

Prime touched Lily’s cheek.

Lily pulled away.

“You’re not my mommy.”

Prime’s expression hardened for the first time.

“I am everyone’s mother.”

Lily held Sarah’s ring and began singing a new melody.

Not the Vane lullaby.

A song Claire had invented when Lily was a baby.

Lights throughout Pelagos flickered.

Residents covered their ears.

Prime screamed.

Deep beneath the city, enormous containment doors began opening.

Prime looked terrified.

“What did you wake?”

A voice came from below.

Not Silas.

Not Miriam.

A man whispered Claire’s childhood name.

May you like

A name no one had ever told her.

“Eleanor.”
