CHAPTER 11 — Vault Thirteen

Daniel stared through the shattered window.

Rain hissed against the flames consuming his SUV.

Below, Richard Calloway rested both hands on his silver cane as though he had all the time in the world.

Beside him, Eleanor sat bound to a chair.

Her face was bruised.

But when she looked up and saw Daniel in the window...

She shook her head.

Not in fear.

In warning.

Daniel understood immediately.

Don't negotiate.

The phone remained against his ear.

Richard spoke calmly.

"You inherited your father's stubbornness."

"I inherited his mistakes."

The line went dead.

Daniel turned.

Margaret was already struggling to her feet.

"We have to reach Vault Thirteen before Richard does."

"You know where it is?"

"I helped build it."

Daniel frowned.

"You keep saying my father trusted you."

"He trusted very few people."

"So why you?"

Margaret's eyes filled with sorrow.

"Because I was there the night he realized someone inside his own company wanted your family erased."

She picked up a faded hospital blueprint from the table.

At first glance, it looked ordinary.

Then Daniel noticed something impossible.

There was no Vault Thirteen.

Only twelve storage chambers were marked.

Margaret smiled faintly.

"Exactly."

She folded the blueprint in half.

Then again.

A hidden layer appeared between the pages.

A thirteenth chamber.

No architect's signature.

No official record.

It had never existed on paper.

Edward Ashford had hidden an entire vault...

Inside a building no one believed still mattered.

They hurried into the basement corridor.

Mr. Graves was waiting.

His sleeve was soaked with blood.

Victoria lay unconscious against the wall.

"She's alive," he said before Daniel could ask.

"The bullet passed through."

Daniel exhaled in relief.

Mr. Graves looked at Margaret.

"You finally decided to come out of hiding."

Margaret answered quietly.

"I should have done it years ago."

There was no time for questions.

The old butler led them through a maze of forgotten tunnels beneath the hospital.

Every few yards, another steel door blocked their path.

Every lock required a different key.

Edward had designed the route like a puzzle.

Not to keep people inside.

To keep everyone else out.

Finally...

They reached a circular steel door covered in dust.

At its center was a single brass lock.

Daniel inserted Key Number 13.

The mechanism clicked.

Nothing happened.

Margaret gently placed her hand over his.

"One key was never enough."

She pulled a second key from around her neck.

Its shape matched Daniel's perfectly.

Together...

The two keys turned.

Deep within the walls, enormous gears groaned to life.

The circular vault door slowly rolled aside.

Cold air rushed out.

The room beyond was surprisingly small.

No mountains of cash.

No gold bars.

No priceless paintings.

Only a wooden table.

One leather folder.

One digital recorder.

And one framed family photograph.

Daniel picked up the photograph first.

His breath caught.

It showed Edward...

Eleanor...

A young Daniel...

And Richard Calloway.

All smiling together at a family picnic.

Across the bottom, Edward had written by hand:

"The day I discovered my best friend had already betrayed me."

Daniel looked up.

"How could my father know?"

"He didn't," Margaret replied.

"He wrote that sentence years later."

Daniel slowly opened the leather folder.

Inside was not a will.

Not a financial agreement.

Not even company records.

It was a signed confession.

Richard Calloway had secretly transferred billions of dollars through shell companies using forged Ashford signatures.

Every transaction.

Every account.

Every witness.

Edward had documented everything.

Richard hadn't been trying to steal an inheritance.

He had already stolen it.

For nearly thirty years.

Mr. Graves picked up the digital recorder.

"There must be more."

He pressed PLAY.

Edward's voice filled the tiny chamber.

"Richard believes this vault contains enough evidence to destroy him."

A pause.

"He's wrong."

Daniel frowned.

Edward continued.

"The documents are only bait."

Everyone looked at one another.

Bait?

Then what was the real secret?

Edward answered as if he were standing beside them.

"The truth Richard fears isn't hidden in these papers."

"It's hidden in a person."

Silence.

Margaret slowly closed her eyes.

"No..."

Edward spoke one final sentence.

"If you've reached this vault..."

"...tell Daniel who Eleanor Ashford really is."

Daniel turned sharply toward his mother.

She wasn't there.

His gaze shifted to Margaret.

Then to Mr. Graves.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally...

Margaret whispered the words she had buried for almost three decades.

"Eleanor..."

"...was never your father's wife by accident."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Before Margaret could answer—

A powerful explosion ripped through the tunnel behind them.

The blast threw everyone to the floor.

Dust filled the air.

The vault lights flickered violently.

When Daniel looked up...

Richard Calloway was standing in the ruined entrance.

His elegant suit was covered in dust.

His silver cane was gone.

In its place...

He held a pistol.

He smiled at Daniel with genuine admiration.

"Congratulations."

"You finally found the wrong secret."

He slowly stepped into Vault Thirteen.

"And now..."

May you like

"...let me show you the one your father died protecting."

To Be Continued...
