CHAPTER 4 — The Hidden Basement

Daniel grabbed the flashlight from the study drawer and aimed it into the darkness.

The beam barely reached the bottom of the narrow stone staircase.

Cold air drifted upward.

It smelled of damp earth...

And something else.

Something metallic.

Blood.

Daniel looked back toward the hallway.

"Lock every door," he called to the maids. "No one leaves this house."

"Yes, sir."

Without another word, he descended.

Each step groaned beneath his weight.

The stone walls grew colder.

The air heavier.

When he reached the bottom, he stopped.

The basement wasn't a wine cellar.

It wasn't a storage room.

It looked more like a hidden archive.

Rows of steel cabinets stretched into the darkness.

Hundreds of labeled boxes filled the shelves.

Every cabinet was locked.

Except one.

Its drawer stood slightly open.

Inside were dozens of thick folders.

Each one carried a different date.

Each one carried a different name.

Housekeepers.

Drivers.

Gardeners.

Lawyers.

Business partners.

Every person who had ever worked for the Ashford family had a file.

Daniel's hands froze when he found another folder.

ELEANOR ASHFORD

He slowly opened it.

Inside were medical records...

Bank statements...

Old family photographs...

And surveillance pictures.

Someone had been secretly following his mother for years.

His breathing became uneven.

Who would spend years watching an elderly woman?

Then he noticed another file beneath it.

His own.

DANIEL ASHFORD

He opened it.

His school records.

His passport copies.

His military service.

His travel schedules.

Even photographs taken only weeks ago during his business trip to Singapore.

Someone had tracked every movement of his life.

Not just recently.

Since childhood.

A chill ran down his spine.

This wasn't blackmail.

This wasn't revenge.

Someone had been building a complete history of the entire Ashford family.

Suddenly—

Click.

A light turned on.

Daniel spun around.

At the far end of the basement...

An old television flickered to life by itself.

Static filled the screen.

Then the image cleared.

Black-and-white security footage.

The date in the corner read:

October 18... Twenty-Eight Years Ago.

Daniel frowned.

The camera showed this exact basement.

His father appeared on screen.

He looked twenty years younger.

Across from him stood...

A woman.

She was holding a baby wrapped in a white blanket.

The camera quality was poor, but Daniel immediately recognized the baby blanket.

His mother had kept it in a wooden chest his entire life.

His heartbeat pounded.

The woman handed the baby to his father.

Then she spoke.

"You promised no one would ever know."

His father answered quietly.

"They never will."

The screen suddenly distorted.

Static swallowed the picture.

Then, for less than a second...

Another face appeared.

Veronica.

No...

Not Veronica.

A young woman who looked almost identical to her.

Same blonde hair.

Same eyes.

Same smile.

Only older.

The image disappeared instantly.

Daniel stared at the frozen screen.

His mind raced.

Veronica wasn't even born twenty-eight years ago.

So who was that woman?

Behind him...

A voice whispered from the darkness.

"You've finally started asking the right question."

Daniel turned sharply, flashlight raised.

The beam revealed an elderly man standing at the end of the corridor.

His clothes were covered in dust.

His gray beard reached his chest.

His eyes never left Daniel.

Then he smiled.

May you like

"I've been waiting twenty years for you."
