CHAPTER 9 — The Ashford Protocol

Victoria's body collapsed into Daniel's arms.
"Victoria!"
His voice echoed through the abandoned maternity ward.
The masked gunmen advanced without urgency.
They weren't running.
They weren't panicking.
It was as if they already knew there was no escape.
The leader calmly pointed his pistol at Daniel again.
"Give me the flash drive."
Daniel glanced beneath the rusted hospital bed.
The drive was still there.
Hidden in the shadows.
"I don't have it."
The masked man chuckled.
"You've always been a terrible liar."
Before he could pull the trigger again—
The hospital suddenly went dark.
Every light.
Every alarm.
Everything died at once.
For two long seconds...
The building was swallowed by absolute darkness.
Then—
Emergency floodlights flickered on.
Not red this time.
Blue.
A calm electronic voice echoed through the corridors.
"Ashford Protocol activated."
The masked men froze.
The leader slowly lowered his weapon.
"No..."
He whispered.
"Who activated it?"
Every locked security door inside the hospital slammed shut.
Steel shutters crashed over every exit.
The gunmen were trapped.
Daniel looked around in confusion.
"What is the Ashford Protocol?"
A weak voice answered.
"...Your father."
Daniel looked down.
Victoria was still alive.
The bullet had struck just below her shoulder.
She struggled to breathe.
"He... built this place... into a safe house."
Daniel stared at her.
"My father owned this hospital?"
"He owned... far more than you know."
A hidden projector suddenly illuminated the far wall.
Static flashed across the screen.
Then a familiar face appeared.
Edward Ashford.
Daniel's father.
He looked older than in any photograph Daniel had ever seen.
He smiled directly into the camera.
"Hello, Daniel."
"If you're watching this..."
"...then I've been dead for quite some time."
Daniel's chest tightened.
The recording continued.
"You believe you've been uncovering my secrets."
Edward shook his head gently.
"You haven't."
"You've only been following the path I designed for you."
Daniel's breathing slowed.
Every step.
Every clue.
Every envelope.
Every hidden room.
His father had expected all of it.
Edward continued.
"If the Ashford Protocol has activated..."
"...then someone inside our family has betrayed us."
Daniel instinctively thought of Veronica.
But Edward spoke again.
"No."
"Not Veronica."
Daniel froze.
His father had answered the question before he even asked it.
Edward smiled sadly.
"I knew you'd suspect your wife."
"She's guilty..."
"...but not of what truly matters."
Daniel's heartbeat pounded.
"Then who?"
Edward looked directly into the camera.
For several seconds...
He said nothing.
Then he finally spoke.
"The person who destroyed our family..."
"...sat beside me every Sunday."
Daniel's mind raced.
Every Sunday.
Family lunch.
Only a handful of people had ever been there.
His mother.
Himself.
Veronica.
The family lawyer.
The chief financial officer.
And one other person.
Edward's oldest friend.
Richard Calloway.
The chairman of Ashford Holdings.
Daniel remembered him clearly.
Kind.
Generous.
Always smiling.
The man who had carried his father's coffin.
Edward's expression hardened.
"Richard wasn't my friend."
"He was my partner."
"Until the day he tried to steal everything."
Daniel stared at the screen.
"No..."
Edward continued.
"If Richard is still alive..."
"...he already knows you're watching this."
At that exact moment—
The projector switched off by itself.
The room fell silent.
Then every phone inside the hospital vibrated simultaneously.
Daniel's phone.
Victoria's phone.
Even one of the masked men's radios.
Each displayed the same incoming video call.
RICHARD CALLOWAY
The leader of the masked team immediately stood at attention.
He answered first.
"Sir..."
An elderly man appeared on the screen.
Perfectly dressed.
Silver hair.
Warm smile.
He looked exactly as Daniel remembered.
Richard folded his hands calmly.
"Good evening, Daniel."
He smiled as though greeting an old friend.
"I suppose you've finally met the ghost your father left behind."
Daniel's fists clenched.
"You murdered him."
Richard laughed softly.
"No."
"I simply finished the game..."
"...that your father started thirty years ago."
He leaned closer to the camera.
"And now..."
"...it's your turn."
The call ended.
Silence returned.
Then Mr. Graves, who had been examining one of the sealed security doors, suddenly looked up.
His face drained of color.
"Daniel..."
"What?"
Mr. Graves slowly pointed toward the projector screen.
"It wasn't your father who activated the Ashford Protocol."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Mr. Graves swallowed hard.
"The protocol requires two living authorizations."
"One belonged to your father."
"The second..."
He paused.
"...belongs to someone the entire world believes died twenty-eight years ago."
The hospital speakers crackled one last time.
A woman's calm voice echoed through every corridor.
"Welcome home, Daniel."
May you like
"I've been waiting for my son."
