CHAPTER 13 — The Fire That Never Happened

Silence settled over Vault Thirteen.

Richard Calloway lay wounded on the concrete floor, staring at the man who had just revealed himself.

"Michael..." Eleanor whispered again, tears filling her eyes.

Daniel looked between them, confused.

"You know him?"

Eleanor nodded.

"I thought he died the same night your father did."

Michael lowered his weapon.

"So did everyone else."

He explained that twenty-eight years earlier, the fire at the Ashford estate had been carefully staged. Two deaths were reported, but neither body belonged to Edward Ashford or Michael. Edward had discovered a massive fraud orchestrated through Ashford Holdings and realized that exposing it without proof would put his family in danger.

So he disappeared.

Not forever.

Just long enough to build an airtight case.

Michael became his unseen investigator, collecting evidence across decades while the world believed he was dead.

Richard laughed bitterly.

"You think you've won because you found old papers?"

Michael calmly removed another flash drive from inside his jacket.

"No."

"We won because Edward never trusted paper."

"The evidence has been stored in encrypted digital archives for years."

Daniel stared at him.

"So my father knew this day would come."

Michael nodded.

"He planned for it."

But before anyone could react, Richard smiled.

"You still don't know who approved every transfer."

His smile widened.

"It wasn't me alone."

For the first time...

Daniel realized the conspiracy had reached far beyond one man.
