CHAPTER 5 — The Butler Who Never Died

Daniel raised the flashlight.

"Who are you?"

The old man stepped into the light.

His clothes were covered with dust, his beard long and unkempt, but his posture remained dignified.

Then he smiled.

"You don't recognize me."

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

There was something strangely familiar about his voice.

Something buried deep in his childhood.

The old man reached into his coat and pulled out a silver pocket watch.

He opened it.

Inside was a faded photograph.

A little boy sat on the shoulders of a man wearing a butler's uniform.

Daniel's heart nearly stopped.

He remembered that day.

He remembered the watch.

"You..." he whispered.

"...Mr. Graves?"

The old man nodded.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Daniel staggered backward.

Twenty years ago, the newspapers had reported that Arthur Graves—the Ashford family's loyal butler—had died in a fire that destroyed the old carriage house.

Daniel had attended the funeral.

He had watched the coffin lowered into the ground.

"I saw your funeral."

Mr. Graves gave a bitter smile.

"So did I."

Silence filled the basement.

"What does that mean?" Daniel demanded.

"It means the man inside that coffin wasn't me."

Daniel stared at him.

"Then whose body was buried?"

Mr. Graves looked away.

"I never found out."

Daniel's pulse pounded in his ears.

Nothing made sense anymore.

"If you've been alive all these years..." he asked, "why didn't you come back?"

The old butler's eyes filled with regret.

"Because your father begged me not to."

Daniel froze.

"My father knew?"

"He arranged my disappearance."

The words hit harder than any punch.

"No..."

"He knew someone inside this family was planning something far bigger than murder."

Daniel felt the room spinning.

"What are you talking about?"

Mr. Graves walked toward one of the steel cabinets and unlocked it with an old brass key.

Inside were dozens of videotapes.

Every tape carried a handwritten label.

Daniel — Age 6

Daniel — Age 10

Daniel — Age 15

Daniel — Wedding Day

Daniel — Business Trip

Every major moment of his life had been recorded.

Someone had been documenting him for decades.

Mr. Graves picked up the oldest tape.

"Your father asked me to keep these hidden."

"Why?"

"Because he knew the day would come when you would stop believing your own memories."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The old man looked directly into his eyes.

"Tell me something."

"When was your earliest memory?"

Daniel answered without thinking.

"My sixth birthday."

"And before that?"

Daniel searched his mind.

Nothing.

Not a single clear image.

No first day of school.

No bedtime stories.

No family vacations.

Only fragments.

Broken pieces.

Faces without names.

Voices without bodies.

Mr. Graves quietly nodded.

"Exactly."

A cold shiver ran through Daniel.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

The old butler reached into the cabinet one final time.

Instead of another videotape...

He removed a sealed hospital envelope.

Across the front was a hospital logo Daniel had never seen.

Below it, written in red ink, were six words that made his blood run cold.

CONFIDENTIAL — INFANT IDENTITY TRANSFER FILE

Daniel's hands began to tremble.

"What... is this?"

Mr. Graves didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he whispered the sentence Daniel feared most.

"The greatest lie in this house..."

He paused.

"...is the one you've called your life."

Before Daniel could open the envelope—

A gunshot exploded somewhere upstairs.

Then another.

The basement lights went black.

And Eleanor's terrified scream echoed through the mansion.

"Daniel... RUN!"
