CHAPTER 2 — The Envelope No One Was Supposed to See

"What... is that?" Veronica asked, her voice suddenly unsteady.
Daniel didn't answer.
His eyes never left his mother.
He crossed the foyer in long, deliberate strides, knelt beside Eleanor, and gently lifted her from the freezing marble floor.
"Mom..." he whispered, horrified. "Who did this to you?"
Eleanor lowered her eyes.
"It doesn't matter."
"It matters to me."
She slowly shook her head.
"Please... don't make this worse."
Daniel stared at the bruises on her wrists.
Fresh fingerprints.
Not old injuries.
Someone had grabbed her hard only minutes earlier.
Behind him, Veronica forced a nervous laugh.
"You're overreacting. She slipped while cleaning."
One of the maids gasped.
The lie was so shameless it made her hands tremble.
Daniel stood.
Without a word, he walked to the black suitcase lying on its side.
The yellowed envelope still protruded from the broken latch.
He picked it up.
Across the front, the faded handwriting read:
Open only after you see everything.
The handwriting belonged to his late father.
Daniel's heartbeat quickened.
His father had died two years earlier.
No one should have known this envelope even existed.
Veronica's face drained of color.
"Daniel..." she said quickly. "That's... just one of your father's old papers."
He looked at her.
Cold.
Silent.
Then he opened the envelope.
Inside...
There was no letter.
Only a single brass key.
A faded photograph.
And a folded note.
The photograph showed a younger Eleanor standing beside Daniel's father in front of the mansion nearly thirty years earlier.
But something immediately felt wrong.
The mansion behind them wasn't finished.
The west wing didn't exist.
Neither did the grand staircase.
Someone had taken the picture before the house was officially completed.
Daniel unfolded the note.
Only one sentence was written.
The truth is buried beneath the west wing. Trust no one—not even your wife.
The room fell silent.
Veronica felt the blood leave her face.
How could his father have known?
Before anyone spoke, a loud crash echoed upstairs.
Everyone looked toward the second floor.
A bedroom door had slammed shut.
One of the maids turned pale.
"Sir..." she whispered.
"I... I thought that room was locked."
Daniel frowned.
"What room?"
"The old master's study."
His expression hardened.
"No one has entered that room since my father's funeral."
Another sound.
Footsteps.
Slow...
Heavy...
Crossing the floor above them.
Daniel looked up.
There shouldn't have been anyone upstairs.
Then every light in the foyer flickered at the same time.
The security alarm suddenly beeped once.
The home's AI announced in a calm mechanical voice:
"Restricted room accessed."
Daniel froze.
Only three people had ever possessed the access code.
His father.
Himself.

And...
Someone who was officially dead.
