CHAPTER 15 — Home

One month later.
Morning sunlight filled the foyer of the Ashford mansion.
The marble floor gleamed once again.
This time, no one was kneeling.
Eleanor slowly walked across the room.
She paused in the exact spot where she had once been forced to scrub the floor.
Daniel joined her.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"I came home too late."
Eleanor smiled gently.
"You came home when it mattered."
Across the room, Veronica approached.
She had testified truthfully during the investigation, admitting the abuse she had inflicted and the lies she had repeated for years.
She stopped several feet away.
"I don't expect forgiveness," she said.
"I only wanted to say... I'm sorry."
Eleanor studied her for a long moment.
"You cannot change what you did."
Veronica lowered her eyes.
"I know."
"But you can decide who you become next."
Those words stayed with Veronica long after she left the mansion.
Later that afternoon, Daniel gathered every employee in the foyer.
"The Ashford family failed many of you," he said.
"That ends today."
He announced new protections for household staff, independent oversight for the company, and a charitable foundation in his parents' names to support elder care and victims of financial exploitation.
As the crowd dispersed, Daniel opened the final envelope his father had left behind.
Inside was a single handwritten note.
"If you're reading this, then you didn't inherit my fortune."
"You inherited my chance to make things right."
Daniel folded the note carefully.
Outside, the front doors stood open.
For the first time in many years, the mansion felt less like a fortress...
May you like
...and more like a home.
