CHAPTER 7 — Where Your Life Really Began

Daniel stared at the phone long after the call had ended.
The woman's voice had sounded strangely familiar.
Not because he knew her...
But because somewhere in his childhood, he had heard that voice before.
"Don't go," Mr. Graves said immediately.
"It's a trap."
Daniel looked down at the hospital envelope.
Across the front, the red words seemed darker than before.
CONFIDENTIAL — INFANT IDENTITY TRANSFER FILE
"If I don't go," Daniel said quietly, "my mother dies."
Mr. Graves closed his eyes.
"Your father knew this day would come."
"He left something else."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
Without another word, Mr. Graves reached into his pocket and removed a small brass key.
It was almost identical to the one Daniel had found inside his father's envelope.
"There were always two keys," the old butler said.
"One opened the basement."
"The other opens the truth."
Twenty minutes later...
Daniel drove alone through the pouring rain.
The GPS on the mysterious phone led him far beyond the city limits.
Past abandoned factories.
Past empty farmland.
Past roads no longer marked on modern maps.
Finally...
The navigation stopped.
Destination reached.
Daniel stepped out of the car.
In front of him stood an abandoned hospital.
Its faded sign barely clung to the cracked brick wall.
ST. AGNES MATERNITY HOSPITAL
Closed twenty-eight years earlier.
Every window was boarded shut.
The parking lot had been reclaimed by weeds.
Yet one light burned inside.
Someone was waiting.
Daniel pushed open the rusted entrance door.
It groaned loudly.
Dust floated through the stale air.
The lobby looked untouched by time.
Broken wheelchairs.
Collapsed ceiling tiles.
Old nursery murals still covered the walls.
Then he saw it.
A trail of fresh muddy footprints.
The same boot prints he had seen in the hidden basement.
Someone had arrived only minutes earlier.
He followed the trail down a dim hallway until it ended at the maternity ward.
Room 204.
The delivery room.
Its door stood slightly open.
Inside...
A woman dressed in black stood with her back to him.
She never turned around.
Instead, she spoke calmly.
"I knew you'd come."
Daniel tightened his grip on the brass key.
"Who are you?"
"You've spent your entire life searching for answers."
She paused.
"But you've been asking the wrong questions."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Where's my mother?"
"Safe."
"For now."
His jaw tightened.
"If you hurt her—"
"I didn't kidnap Eleanor."
She slowly turned.
Daniel stopped breathing.
The resemblance was impossible to ignore.
She had Veronica's eyes.
Veronica's smile.
Veronica's voice.
Only older.
Colder.
And far more dangerous.
"My name is Victoria."
She smiled faintly.
"I'm Veronica's sister."
Daniel felt the floor disappear beneath him.
"So it was you in the photograph."
Victoria nodded.
"Yes."
"And no."
She walked toward a rusted metal cabinet and placed an old photograph on the table.
"Take a closer look."
Daniel picked it up.
It was the same photograph his father had left behind.
Only this version wasn't damaged.
For the first time...
He could clearly see the baby wrapped in a white blanket.
His pulse quickened.
There were two babies.
Not one.
One in his father's arms.
The other in Victoria's.
Daniel looked up sharply.
"What is this?"
Victoria's smile vanished.
"The night you were born..."
She whispered.
"...two boys entered this hospital."
She let the silence linger.
"But only one of them went home as Daniel Ashford."
Daniel's hands began to shake.
"No..."
Victoria slowly pointed toward the hospital envelope still tucked beneath his arm.
"The answer is inside."
Daniel stared at the sealed file.
His thumb slipped beneath the flap.
He hesitated.
Every warning echoed through his mind.
Don't open the file.
Trust no one.
The greatest lie is the one you've called your life.
He took a slow breath...
...and broke the seal.
Before he could pull out the first document—
The hospital's emergency lights suddenly flashed red.
A deafening alarm roared through the abandoned building.
Then a computerized voice echoed from every hallway.
"Unauthorized access detected."
Victoria's eyes widened.
"They found us."
Daniel frowned.
"Who?"
For the first time since meeting her...
Victoria looked genuinely afraid.
She grabbed Daniel's arm.
"We have less than two minutes."
May you like
"They're coming to erase both of us."
