Chapter 13 - THE PHONE CALL TO MY MOTHERI made my consequential mistake after talking to my mother.

I told her everything Sophie had said.

Every detail.

Then my mother saw Sophie two days later and asked:

“Did Daddy make you drink medicine before every bath?”

Leading.

Specific.

Sophie said:

“Yes.”

But we did not know if every bath was accurate.

My mother then asked:

“Did he make the water freezing?”

Another leading question.

Sophie nodded.

When I learned this, I felt sick.

The forensic interviewer documented possible contamination.

Some later statements were treated cautiously.

My mother cried.

“I was trying to understand.”

“I know.”

Good intentions again.

The case had enough other evidence.

But I had failed to protect the cleanliness of Sophie’s account by oversharing before warning family not to question her.

I owned that.
