Chapter 16 - SOPHIE ASKS FOR DADDYA month after separation, Sophie asked:

“When is Daddy coming home?”

I almost lied.

Instead:

“He’s not living here right now.”

“Because of baths?”

“Partly.”

“Did I tell?”

“Yes.”

Her face fell.

“Did I make him leave?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because Daddy made choices adults are responsible for.”

She stared.

“He says I was brave.”

“Who?”

“Teacher.”

I nodded.

Then Sophie asked:

“Was Daddy bad?”

I hated the question.

“Daddy did unsafe things.”

“Is he bad?”

“I don’t think people fit in one word.”

Five-year-old dissatisfaction.

“Do you love him?”

“Yes.”
