There was no hidden sexual abuse supported by the evidence.
No secret second family.
No pornography.
No medical trafficking.
No bizarre cult.
Mark had become obsessed with eliminating Sophie’s bath anxiety.
At first he wanted to help.
Then he wanted to win.
He read enough about exposure therapy to borrow the vocabulary without understanding the safeguards.
He began using timers.
Then removing Sophie’s control over water temperature.
Then physically preventing her from leaving.
Then using diphenhydramine to reduce her resistance.
Then secrecy because he knew I would stop him.
The bathroom became a laboratory where his success measure was obedience.
The “games” were timed endurance exercises:
Sit near water.
Feet in.
Stay seated.
Hair wet.
Head rinse.
No leaving until timer ended.
If she escaped, restart.
Sometimes medication first.
No one professional designed this.
No one approved it.
No one supervised it.
The larger truth was not that Mark had a hidden desire to hurt Sophie.
It was that he had become so convinced fear should be defeated that he stopped seeing Sophie’s fear as information.
