Chapter 26 - THE TIMERThree years after the bathroom night, Sophie found the old kitchen timer in a box.

I had forgotten we kept it.

White plastic.

Red dial.

She picked it up.

“What’s this?”

My body reacted before memory.

Then she remembered.

“Oh.”

I reached.

“Want me to throw it away?”

She looked at it.

“No.”

“What do you want?”

She turned the dial.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

I almost hated the sound.

She set it for five minutes.

“For what?”

“Cookies.”

Of course.

We had cookies in the oven.

The timer rang.

Sophie jumped.

Then laughed.

I laughed too.

Objects are patient.

They wait until we stop assigning them meanings they never asked to carry.
