Chapter 12 - The New Architect

Vale-Tech’s rapid expansion into ethical technology required a massive restructuring of our internal executive team. I needed a Chief Operating Officer who understood my vision and, more importantly, shared my absolute lack of tolerance for corporate corruption.

I sat in the main conference room, reviewing a dozen impressive resumes.

"Send in the next candidate," I called out to my assistant.

The glass door opened, and a tall, sharp-looking man in a meticulously tailored gray suit walked in. His name was Marcus Thorne. He had previously resigned from a massive, multi-billion-dollar tech conglomerate after blowing the whistle on their illegal overseas labor practices.

"Mr. Thorne," I greeted, gesturing to the chair across from me. "Your resume is undeniably brilliant, but your departure from your last firm was highly publicized and somewhat scandalous."

"I don't consider basic human rights to be a scandal, Ms. Vance," Marcus replied smoothly, sitting down with perfect posture. "I discovered they were using child labor in their supply chain. I brought it to the board, they told me to look the other way, so I handed the evidence directly to the federal authorities."

I leaned back in my leather chair, studying his face. He didn't blink. He didn't offer a corporate apology for his actions.

"You understand that Vale-Tech has a very dark history," I noted, testing the waters. "My ex-husband used this company as a playground for fraud."

"I am well aware of Dominic Sterling’s history," Marcus stated, his voice completely level. "I am also aware of what you did to him. You didn't just fire him; you dismantled his entire empire, seized his assets, and put him in a federal cage. That is exactly why I want to work for you."

I raised an eyebrow, genuinely intrigued.

"You want to work for a company with a ruined reputation?" I asked.

"I want to work for a CEO who has the spine to burn a rotten house to the ground and build something better on the ashes," Marcus corrected. "You have the capital, and you have the vision. I have the operational expertise to make Vale-Tech the most ethical, profitable tech firm in the hemisphere."
