Chapter 19 - The Garden Party

|
To celebrate the incredible success of both Vale-Tech and the Elena Vance-Sterling Children’s Foundation, I decided to host a massive garden party at my new home. It was a beautiful, breezy Saturday afternoon, and the sprawling backyard was decorated with elegant white tents, hanging fairy lights, and catered tables overflowing with incredible food.
The guest list was a beautiful, chaotic mix of my high-level corporate executives, the brilliant therapists from the foundation, and dozens of the families we had successfully rescued over the past year.
I stood on the wooden deck, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching the absolute magic unfolding on the lawn below.
Leo was running through the grass, playing a massive, highly disorganized game of tag with five other children. Buster the puppy was barking joyfully, chasing the kids in endless, happy circles.
Sarah, my lead attorney, walked up the steps of the deck and stood beside me, watching the children play.
"This is an incredible turnout, Elena," Sarah said, raising her champagne flute. "You really built a sanctuary here."
"We built it together, Sarah," I corrected her warmly, clinking my glass against hers. "I couldn't have navigated the legal firestorm without you fiercely guarding the gates."
"I just filed the paperwork," Sarah smiled humbly. "You were the one who had the courage to light the match."
I looked out over the garden. I saw mothers who had arrived at my foundation battered, terrified, and financially ruined, now laughing and drinking lemonade, completely safe in the sunlight. I saw children who had lived in constant fear now playing freely, their laughter echoing up into the bright blue sky.
"Mommy!" Leo suddenly yelled, sprinting up the wooden stairs and crashing into my legs. "Buster stole my hotdog!"
I burst out laughing, looking down at my son's outraged, incredibly cute face.

"Well, I guess Buster was hungry," I giggled, wiping a smudge of ketchup from his cheek. "Go ask the chef for another one, and tell him to put it on a higher plate this time."
Leo nodded seriously and sprinted back toward the catering tents. I looked back out at the beautiful, safe world I had fought so brutally to create, feeling a profound, unshakeable peace settle deep into my bones.
