Chapter 13 - The First Bell

|

The end of summer brought a significant, highly emotional milestone to our new life. It was a crisp, beautiful September morning, and Leo was officially starting his first day of kindergarten at a prestigious, private elementary school near our new home.

I stood in the bright, cheerful kitchen, packing his favorite dinosaur-themed lunchbox.

"Mommy, do I have to wear the uncomfortable shoes?" Leo asked, walking into the kitchen wearing a sharp little navy uniform, pointing accusingly at his polished black loafers.

"Yes, little man, you have to wear the school shoes," I laughed, kneeling down to adjust his collar. "But as soon as you get home, you can put your sneakers back on and play with Buster in the yard."

"Okay," Leo compromised easily, grabbing his lunchbox.

We drove to the school, the autumn leaves blowing across the windshield. When we arrived at the massive brick building, the courtyard was filled with nervous parents and excited children.

I walked Leo to the front doors, feeling a sudden, heavy lump form in my throat. For the first few years of his life, I had lived in absolute terror that Dominic would find a way to take him away from me, or worse, poison his beautiful, innocent spirit.

"Good morning, Leo!" a cheerful teacher greeted, stepping out to welcome the new students. "Are you ready for a great day?"

Leo looked up at the teacher, then looked back at me. He didn't cry. He didn't cling to my leg in fear. He simply smiled a bright, fearless smile.

"I am ready," Leo announced proudly.

He threw his arms around my neck, hugging me tightly.

"I love you, Mommy," he whispered.

"I love you too, my brave boy," I replied, blinking back tears of pure joy. "Have the best time."

I watched him walk through the heavy wooden doors, chatting happily with another little boy in a matching uniform. He was completely safe. He was entirely unbroken. I walked back to my car with a profound, unshakeable sense of victory singing in my chest.
