Chapter 10 - The Foundation's Doors

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Elena Vance-Sterling Children’s Foundation took place on a bright Tuesday morning. I had purchased a beautiful, historic brick building in the heart of the city, completely renovating the interior to feel like a warm, welcoming sanctuary rather than a sterile clinic.
The walls were painted in soft pastel colors, and the therapy rooms were filled with comfortable couches, toys, and vast bookshelves.
Dozens of reporters, local politicians, and community leaders gathered outside the front entrance. I stood on the top step, holding a pair of oversized ceremonial scissors. Leo was standing right beside me, proudly wearing a tiny bowtie and holding the end of the bright red ribbon.
"Are we going to cut it now, Mommy?" Leo whispered, tugging gently on my skirt.
"Just one minute, sweetheart," I whispered back, brushing a soft curl from his forehead.
I stepped up to the microphone, looking out at the crowd.
"When domestic violence and financial abuse tear a family apart, the children are often left to navigate the collateral damage in silence," I told the silent, captivated audience. "This foundation exists to ensure that no child ever has to sit in the dark, wondering if they are safe. We are providing top-tier legal defense, trauma therapy, and emergency housing for families who are escaping the unimaginable."
The crowd broke into a loud, supportive round of applause.
"We did not build this place with charity," I continued, my voice steady and fierce. "We built it with the seized, forfeited assets of the very monsters who thought they were above the law. We turned their corruption into our fortress."
I knelt down next to Leo, placing my hands over his small ones on the handles of the scissors.
"Ready, buddy?" I asked.

Together, we squeezed the handles, slicing cleanly through the thick red ribbon. The crowd erupted into cheers, and the heavy glass doors of the foundation swung open, inviting the sunlight and the city inside. We had finally opened the doors to a place where healing was an absolute guarantee.
