Chapter 20 - The Journalist's Interview

|
The massive success of the foundation had attracted the attention of a highly prominent national news magazine. They sent a senior journalist, a sharp, fiercely intelligent woman named Diane, to conduct a sweeping feature interview on my transition from a "tragic victim" to a corporate titan.
We sat in the beautifully lit, peaceful living room of my home. Diane had her digital recorder placed carefully on the glass coffee table between us.
"Elena, your story is undeniably captivating," Diane began, her tone professional but probing. "The public is obsessed with the narrative of the helpless, abused wife who magically overthrows her billionaire husband and takes his throne. But critics argue that your rapid takeover of Vale-Tech was an act of cold, calculated revenge rather than righteous justice."
I didn't flinch. I had anticipated the aggressive angle.
"I find it incredibly fascinating, Diane, that when a man aggressively dismantles a corrupt competitor, it is called brilliant business strategy," I replied smoothly, leaning back in my armchair. "But when a woman meticulously documents massive federal fraud, protects her child from severe abuse, and legally assumes control of the assets to build a charitable foundation, it is labeled as 'revenge.'"
Diane paused, her pen hovering over her notepad. She clearly hadn't expected me to counter her premise so directly.
"I did not take Vale-Tech out of spite," I continued, my voice carrying the absolute weight of undeniable truth. "I took it because Dominic abandoned his right to lead the moment he decided to use the corporate treasury to fund illegal activities and silence his victims. I didn't steal a throne. I condemned a crime scene and built a hospital on top of the ruins."
Diane smiled, a genuine, highly respectful expression crossing her sharp features.

"That is a phenomenal quote, Ms. Vance," Diane noted, leaning forward with sudden, intense interest. "How exactly did you find the courage to document the fraud while living in such a highly volatile, dangerous environment?"
"Courage is a luxury," I answered quietly, looking out the window toward the garden where Leo was playing. "I didn't have courage. I had absolute, unadulterated desperation. When you are fighting for your child's life, you don't calculate the risks. You simply do whatever it takes to survive the dark."
