Chapter 48 - The Eternal Horizon|
We sat quietly together in the absolute, comfortable silence for a long, peaceful time, simply watching the wide, powerful river flow endlessly toward the vast, distant sea. The bright morning sun had fully crested the lush, green tree line, completely illuminating the deep water in a stunning, brilliant display of pure, sparkling diamonds.
"Do you ever deeply miss it?" Leo asked softly, briefly breaking the gentle silence. "The intense rush of the huge corporate battles, the massive pressure of constantly running everything?"
I thought carefully about his deep question for a long, quiet moment, taking another slow, warm sip of my tea.
"No," I answered entirely truthfully, a profound, heavy weight completely gone from my voice. "I fiercely fought those massive, exhausting battles because I absolutely had to, Leo. I built that heavy, impenetrable fortress so that you would never, ever have to know the dark, terrible things I survived. I did it entirely for this exact moment."
"For sitting perfectly on a deck eating slightly burnt bacon?" he joked gently, a soft, loving smile completely lighting up his dark eyes.
"For knowing that you are completely, absolutely safe," I corrected him gently, reaching over to lovingly squeeze his strong hand. "And fiercely knowing that you are now actively using your amazing, brilliant life to bring that same profound safety and beautiful light to millions of completely innocent people. My long, brutal war is permanently over. Yours is a beautiful journey of massive healing."
He squeezed my tired hand firmly back, a deep, profound understanding completely passing warmly between us.
"I proudly promise I won't completely mess it up, Mom," he vowed softly, his voice completely thick with pure, unshakeable devotion.

The vast, beautiful horizon stretched out incredibly wide before us, completely endless, aggressively bright, and completely unbreakable. We were finally, truly, perfectly free.
