Chapter 24 - The Art Exhibition

|

Leo had developed a profound, passionate obsession with painting. Our kitchen table was constantly covered in bright watercolors, messy finger paints, and abstract, chaotic drawings of dinosaurs and puppies.

Dominic had absolutely hated messes. He would scream if Leo so much as dropped a crayon on the hardwood floor, terrifying the boy into total, agonizing stillness.

But in our new home, art was celebrated. I framed his messy, beautiful creations and hung them proudly in the hallways, completely reclaiming his right to be a normal, creative child.

On a rainy Saturday, Leo’s preschool hosted a children's art exhibition in the school gymnasium. I walked through the double doors holding Leo’s hand, feeling a deep, heavy swell of pride.

The gymnasium was filled with parents admiring the colorful, wildly chaotic artwork pinned to the walls.

"Where is your painting, buddy?" I asked, looking down at his excited face.

"It's over here, Mommy! It's the biggest one!" Leo cheered, dragging me forcefully across the gymnasium floor.

We stopped in front of a massive, brightly painted canvas. It was a chaotic explosion of bright yellow and deep blue paint. In the center were two abstract, stick-figure shapes holding hands, standing next to a very lopsided yellow shape that was clearly meant to be a dog.

"It's us, Mommy," Leo explained proudly, pointing a tiny finger at the stick figures. "It's you and me and Buster. We are standing in the sunshine."

Tears instantly welled in my eyes, completely blurring my vision. The psychological damage Dominic had tried to inflict on my son had been entirely washed away. His internal world wasn't filled with dark, terrifying shadows anymore; it was filled with brilliant, unshakeable sunshine.

"It is the most beautiful painting I have ever seen in my entire life," I whispered, kneeling down and pulling him into a massive, crushing hug.

"I love painting," Leo giggled, hugging me back tightly.

"You can paint every single day, forever," I promised him fiercely, burying my face in his soft hair. "You can make as much beautiful mess as you want."
